community affairs

We continue to maintain a strong commitment to expanding our community affairs activities. We expect our activities to grow as we develop formal community dialogue and engagement plans at each operation and learn more about the needs and priorities of our communities.

Inmet’s operations bring many socioeconomic benefits to the communities where we operate. We employ many local workers, providing wages and benefits comparable or better than local standards, and offering training and advancement opportunities. We contribute substantially to the tax base of each community, and we contribute to local charities, infrastructure projects and community improvement initiatives.

During 2007 we significantly strengthened our efforts in community outreach. We had also hoped to make more substantive progress on identifying community priorities for investments during the year. We learned that our efforts to improve community engagement will be a long-term process to build confidence within our operations and communities and that our increased emphasis on community interaction is a beneficial and core part of our business. We recognize that without a comprehensive understanding of community concerns, we are not able to address issues in a prudent and effective manner.

For 2008, we have committed to continue to improving our understanding of our local communities and our role within them. We will also work to increase resources at our operations to improve our understanding of and ability to incorporate community interests into our annual budget process.
